dated January 31, 1958: Homage to martyrs

President Rajendra Prasad and Prime Minister Nehru were among thousands of people who gathered at Rajghat on January 30 to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his tenth death anniversary which is also observed as “Martyrs Day.” A two-minute silence was observed at the stroke of eleven in memory of all those who laid down their lives in the cause of India’s freedom. After the President had laid a wreath at the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi, buglers from the three Services sounded the last post, on the final note of which guns were fired to mark the beginning of the two-minute silence period. The entire gathering stood in silence till the guns were fired again to mark the end of the memorial service. The tribal chiefs who had come to the capital from different parts of India to take part in the Republic Day celebrations and the U.N. Kashmir representative Dr. Frank Graham were also present.
