This Day That Age
Problems relating to the inculcation of higher standards of safety consciousness amongst railwaymen responsible for the running of trains were discussed in great detail at New Delhi on January 28 at a special meeting of Railway General Managers convened by the Railway Minister, Mr. Jagjivan Ram. Addressing the meeting, the Railway Minister said that even though statistics could be produced to prove that the performance of the Indian railways in the field of safety was better now than previously or that it was better than that of some other leading railway systems, the travelling public was not interested in such arguments and would not feel satisfied by such statistics. An accident was always a matter of concern, and it was up to the railway administrations to satisfy themselves that all necessary steps were being taken to minimise the incidence of accidents occurring due to failure of the human element, either from laxity or negligence on the part of staff. Cases of accidents should be analysed to pin-point particular areas where the situation called for remedial measures. Trade unions of railwaymen should equally be concerned with the safety of train operation and should play a positive role in increasing safety consciousness amongst railwaymen.
