Corrections and clarifications

  • The last sentence in the first paragraph of an article “Overcoming the stigma of leprosy” (Editorial page, January 30, 2008) was: “… Hence the importance of Gandhiji’s real and symbolic involvement for more than five people who at the time suffered from the disease and its attendant hardships.” It should have been “for more than five million people”.

  • In a report “Three more steel plants coming up” (Visakhapatnam edition – Orissa, January 30, 2008, page 3), the fourth and fifth paragraphs were: “Pradhan Steel proposes to set up a 0.50 tonnes of steel per annum capacity with an investment of Rs. 606 crores at Dhurusia in Cuttack district, while Atha Mines will set up a 0.25 capacity unit with an investment of Rs. 291.60 crores at Tarkabeda in Dhenkanal district. Tecton Ispat will set up a 0.25 capacity steel mill at an investment of Rs. 227.13 crores at Tarkabeda in Dhenkanal.

“The 49 MoUs signed with different private companies envisages production of 75.66 tonnes of steel per annum at a total investment of around Rs. 2,00,000 crores.”

The Special Correspondent, Orissa, clarifies that it was an error. In the case of Pradhan Steel it should have been 0.50 million tonne capacity, and for Atha Mines and Tecton Ispat 0.25 million tonne capacity each. Likewise, the 49 MoUs signed with different private companies envisage a production of 75.66 million tonnes of steel per annum.

  • The heading of a report (Chennai, January 30, 2008) was “Fiat to BSNL subscribers”. (The report was on the transfer of numbers and subscribers having to register passwords for certain facilities) The Oxford English Dictionary says that “fiat is a formal authorisation for a proposed arrangement, a decree, an order; a command by which something is brought into being.” The word “fiat” is inappropriate here. The heading could have been “Notice to BSNL subscribers”.

  • The caption of the accompanying photograph in a report “Toyota President meets Manmohan Singh” (“Business” page, January 29, 2008) was “Courtesy Call: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh (left) with President of Toyota Group Katsuaki Watanabe at a meeting in New Delhi on Monday.” It should have been “Prime Minister Manmohan Singh (right) ….”

In the first paragraph of the same report, the contraction of the Toyota Motor Corporation was given as TMS. It should have been TMC as given in subsequent paragraphs.

  • The seventh paragraph in an AFP report “Imran, Jemima come together at protest” (“International” page, January 29, 2008) was: “‘I cannot understand how he [British Prime Minister Gordon Brown] can be hosting a dictator [Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf] and talking about democracy without a great big smile on his face,’ said Jemima Khan.” It should have been “… with a great big smile on his face.”

  • In a cricket report “Hayden’s century keeps India at bay” (“Sport”, January 27, 2008) the scoreboard was “Fall of wickets (at Adelaide): 1-159 (Kumble), 2-186 (Hayden), 3-241 (Hussey). It should have been “1-159 (P. Jacques)”. Kumble was the bowler.
