GURGAON: S.S.P. Chowrasia missed a 12-foot ‘eagle’ put on the 18th hole but still managed to snatch a one-shot lead after carding a five-under 67 in the opening round of the Solaris Chemtech Open golf championship at the Golden Greens Golf and Country Club here on Wednesday. Chowrasia, one-under at the turn, sank birdies on the 12th, 14th, 15th and the 18th holes for a bogey-free back nine. All day, this genial Kolkata-pro enjoyed hitting and putting while braving cold conditions. Mercifully, there was not much breeze on this day and that contributed to good scores. Gagangjeet Bullar trailed Chowrasia by a stroke. He started from the 10th hole and was 3-under after nine holes after an ‘eagle’ on the 14th and a birdie on the 17th. Bhullar was looking good for a strong finish after birdies on the first, second and fourth holes but bogeys on the eighth and ninth holes spoilt his card. The scores: S.S.P. Chowrasia 67; Gaganjeet Bhullar 68, Anura Rohana (Sri), Naman Dawar, Shamim Khan, Digvijay Singh and Himmat Singh Rai 69; Chirag Kumar, K.P.S. Sekhon, Vijay Kumar and Karanjit Singh Sandhu 70. — Special Correspondent
