Kavya Bharat in two semifinals

Madurai: Unseeded Kavya Bharat of Tamil Nadu, with impressive performance, entered the semifinals in both the girls under-14 and under-16 sections in the AITA junior talent series (ranking) tennis tournament at the Madurai Union Club courts on Wednesday.

Kavya Bharat, provided two upsets on Wednesday before entering the under-14 semifinals. She beat first seventh seed Prithika Rani 6-2, 6-2 in the pre-quarterfinals and went on to eliminate second seed Abhinaya 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

Ambika Pande, who upset top seed Ashwini Suresh, 6-1, 6-3 in the girls under-14 prequarter-finals, went on to beat A. Ankitha 6-4, 6-0 to enter the semifinals.

In men’s singles of the State-level tournament, top seed P. Manikandan beat P. Balaji 9-0 to enter the quarterfinals.

Nathan bats well

S.P. Nathan’s 69 (30 balls) helped Ramesh Flowers Cricket Club defeat Classic Cricket Club by 56 runs and enter the semifinals of the TDCA-Ramesh Flower Rattan Trophy prize money Twenty 20 cricket tournament at Tuticorin on Wednesday. The others to make the semifinal grade were Power CC and DCW CC and Sea Lines CC.

The scores: Quarterfinals: Ramesh Flowers CC 172 for four in 20 overs (S.P. Nathan 69) bt Classic CC 116 for four in 20 overs (Muthukumar 43, Godson 46); TRC CC 118 for seven in 20 overs (Sunder 44) lost to DCW CC 120 for nine in 18.3 overs (Raj 50, Rajan 38, Siva four for 19); ASKR CC 83 in 17.1 overs lost to Power CC 84 for four in 15.1 overs; Sea Lines CC 118 in 18.4 overs (Navaneetha Krishnan 50) bt SDR CC 108 in 19.3 overs.

Karaikudi team wins

Karaikudi Town Hockey Club recorded two wins on Wednesday to top the five-team league of the Karaikudi-leg Sivagangai District Hockey league with an all-win record (12 points) at Karaikudi on Wednesday. Alagappa University of Physical Education finished second with 9 points.

Both the teams have qualified for the main league along with the Sivagangai leg qualifiers. The Sivagangai-leg league commences on Thursday at collector’s office complex in Sivagangai.

The results (league): Karaikudi Town HC 4 (Gopal 3, Pandiyan) bt Alagappa Model HSS 0; AUCPE 2 (Rajasekar, Satheesh) bt Alagappa Govt. Arts College 0; Karaikudi Town HC 3 (Pandy, Androw, Deepan) bt Alagappa Chettiar College of Engg. 1 (Rajesh Kannan); ACCET 1 (Premkumar) drew with Alagappa Govt. Arts College 1 (Saravanan).

TIES 2008 from Feb. 2

The 26th Tamil Nadu Inter-Engineering Sports meet, organised by Sathak College of Engineering, will get underway at Kilakarai, near Ramanathapuram on February 2. About 80 colleges from all over Tamil Nadu will be participating.

The women’s games meet will be held from February 6 to 13. The athletics meet for men and women will be held from February 14 to 16.

A two-week long meet of this magnitude is a big sports event in these rural parts.

The Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman, K. Rahman Khan, will inaugurate the meet on February 1. The Governor of Tamil Nadu, Surjit Singh Banaala, will be the chief guest and the State Electricity Minister, Arcot N. Veerasamy, will give away the awards at the valedictory function to be held on February 16.

Namakkal to meet Kancheepuram

Namakkal will meet Kancheepuram in the final of the senior State football championship for women, conducted by the Nagapattinam District Football Association, here.

The results: Semifinals: Namakkal 4 (Mahalakshmi 2, Kokila 2) bt Nilgris 0; Kancheepuram 2 (Sindhuja 2) bt Cuddalore 0.

Narrow win for Salem BC

Riding on the brilliance of Santhosh Kumar (20 pts) and Viswanathan (23 pts), Salem Basketball Club edged out SAI Basketball Club (Mayiladuthurai) 66-65 in a second round men’s knockout match in the 17th State-level basketball tournament at the Government BHSS (South) courts in Namakkal on Wednesday.

Ganesan (34 pts) and Praveen Kumar (18 pts) chipped in their best for the losing team.

On the distaff side, Dr. LMR Basketball Club (Erode) posted a 44-34 win over Selvam College (Namakkal).

Madras will meet VBS in the final of the all-India inter-zone inter-university hockey tournament in Thanjavur on Thursday.

In the semifinals on Wednesday, Madras edged MG Kasi Vidyapith 1-0, while VBS defeated Sambalpur 3-2.

The results: Semifinals: Madras 1 (Raja) bt MG Kasi Vidyapith 0; VBS 3 (Amarnath Ram, Lakshmi Shankar Yadav, Janardhanan) bt Sambalpur 2 (Dharmendra Das, Salam). Third place: MG Kasi Vidyapith 7 bt Sambalpur 6 (via tie-breaker).

Semifinalists spotted

Host Annamalai, Madras, Calicut and Burdwan advanced to the semifinals of the all-India inter-zone inter-university football tournament in Chidambaram on Wednesday.
