Meher Atwal triumphs

BANGALORE: Meher Atwal held on to the top spot in the Ladies All India Open Amateur golf championship to win the Billoo Sethi trophy, presented to the winner of the qualifying round in the Gold Division (Handicap 0-12) at the Eagleton Golf Resort here on Wednesday.

Mehar returned a card of one-under 71 to win the title by one stroke from Laverri Kumar whose card of two-under 70 failed by a whisker. Sharmila Nicollet also had a card of two under-70 but her first round showing retained her in third place.

Mehar excelled on the 8th, 15th and 16th holes to notch up fine birdies. She faltered on the sixth and seventh ending up with bogeys but managed to keep the top spot by a solitary stroke. With this win Mehar is seeded number in the All India match-play tournament that commences on Thursday and will be played till Sunday.

Laverri Kumar’s card of two-under 70, had three birdies and a sole blemish for her to take the second spot.

Sharmila Nicollette, played a markedly improved game in the second round. She notched up an eagle (8th hole) and three birdies (5th, 13th and 16th) mixed with a bogey and a double bogey to finish third.

In the silver division Anisha Padukone, won the AVM trophy beating Prateeksha Ravi in a play-off. They had tied scores of 171 over the two days.

Anisha takes the top seeding for the Vikramaditya trophy commencing from Thursday.

Asha Doshi won the DT Salver for ladies in the 25-36 handicap section (bronze division). Aditi Ashok the 10- year- old in the fray was the runner-up.

The results: Strokeplay: Qualifying rounds (36 holes): Gold Division (0-12 handicap): 1. Mehar Atwal 74, 71 (145), 2.Laverri Kumar 76, 70 (146), 3. Sharmila Nicollet 78, 70 (148),4. Gauri Monga 77, 80 (157). Silver Division (13-24): 1. Anisha Padukone 84, 87 and Prateeksha Ravi 86, 85 (171 each), 3. Sharmeen Chinoy: 88, 84 (172) Bronze Division: 1. Asha Doshi 96, 102 (198), 2. Aditi Ashok 99, 102 (201), 3. Rama Khanna 106, 105 (211). Presidency prevails

Striking once in either half through Nouman and Siddarth, Presidency School recorded a convincing 2-0 victory over Poorna Pragna (Yelahanka) in the Columbia Asia organised inter-school football tournament at the Sahakarnagar grounds here on Wednesday.

Parachute School and Military School both scored runaway victories over East West and Silicon Valley.
