CHENNAI: Several technical organisations in the city will soon come together to host a science festival in the city in February. The Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology is organising the five-day festival, in co-ordination with Anna University, IIT-Madras, CLRI, Madras University, the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, Cancer Institute and the Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre. The State Government is sponsoring the event, which will be held from February 6 to 10 at the Science City in Guindy. The Science City, an autonomous organisation under the Department of Higher Education, conducts a variety of programmes aimed at promoting and popularising science and technology. “The objective of the festival is to raise awareness among the community about the impact of science in everyday life,” said Science City’s vice-chairman V. Varaprasada Rao. Display of modelsThe festival will include an exhibition of scientific models in 122 stalls. Models that have won awards and recognition will be exhibited for students to mull over and come up with solutions and products the world may require in future. There will be special lectures by eminent scientists and senior academics, including M. Anandakrishnan, former Vice-Chancellor of Anna University, Sultan Ahmed Ismail of Eco Science Foundation and David Mumford, a professor at the Applied Mathematics Division of Brown University, the U.S.A. Panel discussions on future developments in science have also been planned. ContestsEssay writing and oratorical contests will be held for school and college students in Tamil and English. The topics include environmental pollutions and solutions, nuclear energy and its applications for peaceful purpose, using biotechnology to help agriculture, and solving energy crisis through bio-fuels. Topics for the oratorical contests include importance of the environment, scientific principles and applications used in everyday life, and science for development of human welfare. There will be a quiz contest for school and college students in English. There will also be a mini quiz contest. TNPCB’s awareness team will conduct shows with scientific themes using puppetry, magic, dance and drama. There will also be a food court. School and college students must produce their identity card to get a free entry coupon. For others the entrance fee is Rs. 5. The exhibits displayed at the science festival can be viewed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Entertainment programmes at the science festival will be held from 2 to 4 p.m.
