HYDERABAD: Special occasions such as Republic Day or Teachers Day will turn special for the children at Central Upper Primary School. Far from the maddening crowd and in quiet surroundings, the school which lay close to Hafeezpet railway station will have young volunteers from the IT sector descending on the campus to add a new dimension to the celebrations for them.

As part of Corporate Social Responsibility, Convergys has adopted the Project 511 School and its employee volunteerism is seen in full measure as they pitch in their might in different ways. Not content with mere raising funds to provide uniforms, pencil boxes, stationery and such material, they also spend time with the students as part of celebrations at school including the Annual Day.

And the best thing is that when examinations are around, these IT minds troop in to conduct tutorials to prepare the students for the question papers, particularly in Mathematics and English. “The focus is on helping the children in education and apart from tutorials, our boys and girls have raised direct donations to the tune of Rs.2.25 lakh to get uniforms, pencil boxes and such things,” says Paresh Shah, Vice-President and General Manager, Convergys Corporation.

Plans are also afoot to run medical camps for these students and also make them more aware on health issues. To help better learning, two teachers are also sponsored as part of the social responsibility taken up by the employees. Convergys has a staff of 1,350 in the city at present and at least 100 of them are part of these endeavours at any given time, says Mr. Shah. A 12-member core group has been put in place to plan activities for schoolchildren and monitor them.

The school is part of Project 511, an initiative of Hyderabad Round Table 8 and M.V. Foundation. The charter of the project is to fund the maintenance of government schools by way of meeting their operational expenditure and additional maintenance overheads that include adding more teachers.
