Kodiyeri to open flower show

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Flower and Aquarium show 2008 begins in the capital on February 1.

Minister for Home and Tourism Kodiyeri Balakrishnan will inaugurate the flower show at the Institution of Engineers’ hall. Law Minister M. Vijayakumar will inaugurate the aquarium show, Mayor C. Jayan Babu said at a press conference here on Wednesday.

Over 10,000 flowering plants being brought from outside the State will usher in Spring to the hillocks of Observatory Hill for the next 10 days. Contests are being held in various categories such as roses, flowering plants, ornamental plants, annual flowering plants, orchids and anthuriums, in which individuals, commercial nurseries as well as institutions will take part.

Competitions in flower arrangements are being organised at the Institution of Engineers’ hall on all 10 days of the flower show. The aquarium show, being organised by Matsyafed and Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, is also arranged on the same premises. Contests are being held in this category also. In all, 35 rolling trophies and attractive cash prizes await the winners in various events.

The flower show is being jointly organised by the city Corporation, Kerala Agri-Horticultural Society and Kerala Rose Society, with the active collaboration of the Department of Tourism.

Admission to the flower and aquarium show will be from 9 a.m. till 1 p.m. and from 3 p.m. till 8 p.m. The ticket rates will be Rs.15 a person in the morning and Rs.20 in the evening. School children will be charged Rs.10 for a ticket.

The Flower Show commenced in a small way in 1949, under the auspices of the Agri-horticultural Society of Trivandrum.

It is after 1975 that the show began to be held as a regular annual event in the Kanakakkunnu premises.
