‘Take up study of lifestyle of tribal people in Western Ghats’

Parampara to showcase the region’s culture

Concern over decline in cultural values

Novel project: Acting Vice-Chancellor of Kannada University, Hampi, H.C. Boralingaiah launching work on Parampara at Bidarooru in Sagar taluk on Wednesday.

SAGAR (SHIMOGA DISTRICT): The acting Vice-Chancellor of Kannada University, Hampi, H.C. Boralingaiah, said on Wednesday that there was a need to preserve and promote cultural heritage by voluntary organisations as it was not possible for the Government alone to do it.

He was addressing a gathering after laying the foundation stone for “Parampara”, a centre for creating awareness about fragile ecosystem in the Western Ghats, at Bidarooru near Kargal town in Sagar taluk.

Expressing his concern over the decline in cultural values owing to the “invasion” of Western culture, he suggested that an in-depth study of the lifestyle and food habits of the local tribal people, who had been making a significant contribution for the conservation of the Western Ghats, be taken up.

He congratulated the Adventurers, a forum that has been promoting environmental awareness in the Western Ghats through its activities, for launching Parampara.

Folklore expert Sreepad Shetty, recipient of the Suvarna Karnataka Award Kagodu Annaji, recipients of the Karnataka Janapada and Yakshagana Academy award G.S. Bhat and Takappa, and S.L.N. Swamy of the Adventurers were present.

According to convener of the Adventurers Nomito Swamy, Parampara is an effort to showcase the rich culture of the region and create an opportunity for tourists to become part of the local culture by living and experiencing it fully.

Parampara is aimed at raising consciousness and creating behavioural or mindset changes among the visitors.

The visitors will be exposed to local fairs and festivals such as “Bhoomi Hunnime” and “Hole Habba”, dance and music, and traditional attire of the local communities.

Local communities will also have a role to play in this experiment.
