Karur farmers seek more transparency in disbursal of damages
Staff Reporter
KULITHALAI: Farmers in Karur district have raised bitter complaints against lack of transparency in disbursal of damages for rain-affected crops, excesses in sand mining in rivers and shortage of fertilizers.
There was absolutely no transparency in enlisting or assessing damages caused to crops following heavy unseasonal rain last month. Officials were cagey and did not come up with forthright answers for the various doubts raised by the farmers. The whole exercise smacked of legitimacy, claimed Kulithalai Farmers Discussion Group Convener A.V. Gopaladesikan who was supported by all sections of farming community at the farmers’ grievances day meeting held here on Wednesday.
Officials replied that already the damages had been assessed and a sum of Rs.7 lakh sanctioned. Over 350 farmers were found affected by the recent rains, they observed. Collector T.N. Venkatesh said that a sum of Rs.4,000 per hectare would be given as compensation for the affected wetlands.
