Talented: S.S. Palani Manickam, Union Minister of State for Finance, giving a prize to the student who won a competition in the State-level individual talent meet for school students in Thanjavur on Wednesday.

THANJAVUR: Youth have not lost interest in our music and dance. Given a chance they will prove their talents and how deep they are involved in our art and culture, said Union Minister of State for Finance S.S. Palani Manickam here on Wednesday.

Speaking at the state-level prize distribution function to students who won in the competitions conducted by School Education Department to bring out individual talents among them, Mr. Palani Manickam said that there is a misconception among people that the present day youth are not interested in our art forms.

The fine arts talents exhibited by the school students in the competitions held at Thanjavur for the past two days disproves this.

The Union Minister stressed the need for creating awareness among youth about modern dangers like AIDS and other evil habits. What is needed is awareness instead of keeping them in dark.

Youth should not bother about success or defeat in life. They should keep on trying, the Minister said. Former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s full potential was known only when he became the President. He kindled the spirit of youth of India.

The Minister thanked the Minister for School Education, Thangam Thennarasu for selecting Thanjavur for conducting the individual talent competitions for school students.

The District Collector, C. Vijyararaj Kumar, said that it does not matter how many marks the students scored in examinations. The point is whether they succeeded in life or not. He said that 950 students from all over the State participated in the competitions. The Minister distributed the prizes to the students.

The Chief Educational Officer, A. S. Radhakrishnan, the Chairperson, District Panchayat, Selvi Sivagnanam participated in the meeting.
