L. Narayanasamy, District Governor of Rotary International, presenting a cheque to N. Manivannan, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Tirupur, for finger print project at a function held on Wednesday. — TIRUPUR: The Coimbatore district police will soon launch a tech-savvy programme to digitise the finger prints of persons who are alleged to have been involved in criminal activities. The police has all along recorded these finger prints manually. Now, with the help of a software from a Chennai-based firm, the department is on the process of computerising these finger prints for ready reference. G. Karthikeyan, Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore district, told The Hindu that they had loaded 22,000 finger prints in main server during the past two months from the crime records bureau. Procedure“Police sleuths find difficulties with the present procedure, which is a manual one, when they secure a person on suspicion. It will take one or two days to verify his/her finger prints with our records and the law did not permit us to detain them for over a day for inquiry,” he remarked. Once the digitization of finger prints was over, the police officials can send finger prints of suspected persons on e-mail from police stations. Within hours, the district headquarters will tell after going through the records whether the person was wanted for any case or had been involved in any crime. Mr. Karthikeyan hoped that the effort that was expected to give almost instant information would help police officials in detection and prevention of crimes. Servers would be installed at all the police sub-divisions including Tirupur, Palladam and Avanashi in two months. Sponsoring the effort, L. Narayanasamy, District Governor of Rotary International, presented a cheque for Rs. 1.25 lakh to N. Manivannan, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Tirupur, on Wednesday.
