Bharathiar University plans Bharathi monument
Shastry V. Mallady
MADURAI: Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, plans to take the life and works of freedom fighter and poet Subramania Bharathi to a global audience through Non-Resident Indians and foreign universities.
The university will build a monument and launch international research under projects it has lined up to commemorate his 125th birth anniversary.
Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam told The Hindu here on Wednesday that the university recently set up Bharathiar Research Centre to encourage research by scholars of foreign universities in their own languages. “We plan to spend Rs.25 crore on the monument that will come up on the university campus. The university has allotted a seed money of Rs. 5 crore and the rest will be mobilised from NRIs and donors in India.” The work would begin soon.
Dr. Thiruvasagam said it was time to involve foreign universities in research on Bharathi’s works because his legacy should be taken worldwide.
“Our university has relaxed Ph. D. guidelines, too. Those from foreign universities who want to pursue research on Bharathi’s works can do so by taking a recognised guide,” he said.
