ALL SET: Collector R. Kirlosh Kumar, accompanied by M. S. K. Bhavani Rajendran and A. Ravichandra Ramavanni, visiting a stall established at the multimedia exhibition in Ramanathapuram on Wednesday. RAMANATHAPURAM: A total of 55,955 free colour television sets were distributed so far in the district, according to Collector R. Kirlosh Kumar. Inaugurating an exhibition organised by the Department of Information and Public Relations here on Wednesday, he said 22,500 more television sets would be distributed within the first three months of 2008. Similarly, 24,975 beneficiaries received free gas stoves and connections at a cost of Rs.4.09 crore. A sum of Rs. 5.11 crore was distributed to 77,848 beneficiaries under Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Assistance Scheme. Mr. Kumar said 3.71 lakh family card holders were being provided 20 kg of rice at a cost of Rs.2 a kg per month. As many as 12,339 new cards were distributed in the district. Nearly 3,000 landless farmers were given 2,261 acres of land at free of cost. There were nearly 20 stalls at the exhibition. The people should utilise the opportunity to visit the stalls to know more information about various welfare schemes being implemented by the Government. M.S.K. Bhavani Rajendran, Member of Parliament, Ramanathapuram constituency, said the State Government had been implementing numerous welfare as well as development schemes in the State. The Central Government had decided to implement the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in Ramanathapuram district. She said efforts were taken to announce Ramanathapuram district as drought-hit. Officials should make steps to take the drought situation to the Government. A movement should be started to propagate the benefits of Sethu project. The people should come forward to join hands with the State and Central Government to restart the project that was aimed at developing the southern districts. A. Ravichandra Ramavanni, Chairman, District Panchayat, said the State Government should take immediate steps to start a medical college in the district on the lines of the policy decision announced by the State Government to have one medical college for each district. The conversion of broad gauge line between Manamadurai and Karaikudi should be expedited so that more number of trains could be plied from Rameswaram to other parts of the country. V. Palanisamy, Chief Educational Officer, Saravanan, I&PRO and others participated.
