VINA DEL MAR: Chilean top seed Fernando Gonzalez, a two-time champion on the Vina del Mar claycourt event, opened his campaign for a third title with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Davis Cup teammate Paul Capdeville on Tuesday. Gonzalez, the World No. 24, won the title here in 2002 and 2004. However, second-seeded Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela, who has never won a match here, crashed out, falling 7-6(0), 6-2 to 20-year-old Italian Fabio Fognini. Defending champion Luis Horna of Peru moved into the second round with a 6-4, 6-4 win over fifth-seeded Argentinian Agustin Calleri. The results: Fernando Gonzalez bt Paul Capdeville 7-5, 6-3; Fabio Fognini bt Juan-Ignacio Chela 7-6(0), 6-2; Feranado Verdasco bt Hans Podlipnik 6-4, 6-3; Luis Horna bt Agustin Calleri 6-4, 6-4; Marcel Granollers-Pujol bt Boris Pashanski 7-6(4), 6-2; Daniel Gimeno-Traver bt Eduardo Schwank 6-4, 1-6, 6-1; Carlos Berlocq bt Nicolas Devilder 7-5, 6-2; David Marrero bt Adrain Garcia 6-7(2), 7-6(3), 6-4; Martin Vassallo Arguello bt Olivier Patience 6-4, 6-1.
