KOCHI: The State government could earn an additional revenue of Rs.88 crore in December following the Grand Kerala Shopping Festival, Collector A.P.M. Muhammad Hanish has said. The sales tax collection in December 2006 was Rs.561 crore, whereas the revenue in December 2007 was Rs.649 crore. The revenue figures were likely to go up as the final sales figures were yet to come. While computing the revenue, the revenue from the sale of liquor and medicine was not considered, said K.N. Satish, director of the Grand Kerala Shopping Festival. During the 45-day festival, 2,195 shops across Kerala participated and offered prizes to consumers. Cars, TVs, flats and tickets for foreign travel were offered as gifts, they said. The valedictory session of the festival will be held at Ambedkar Stadium on February 3 at 5.45 p.m. Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan will inaugurate the meeting. Finance Minister Thomas Isaac will preside. A variety entertainment programme will be organised in this connection.
