450th anniversary of Diocese of Cochin

KOCHI: The year-long celebrations of the 450th anniversary of the establishment of the Diocese of Cochin will culminate in a public meeting, scheduled to be inaugurated by the former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on February 3 on the Aquina’s College premises, Edakochi.

Bishop of Cochin John Thattungal told mediapersons here on Wednesday that the public meeting would be preceded by a solemn Eucharistic celebration led by Cardinal Oswald Gracias, Archbishop of Mumbai.

Archbishop Daniel Acharuparambil of Varappuzha, president of the Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council, will preside over the public function, Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil, head of the Syro-Malabar Church, and Mar Baselios Cleemis, Catholicos of Syro-Malankara Church, will speak.

Union Minister for Labour Oscar Fernandez will lay the foundation for the orthopaedic section of Fathima Hospital, Perumpadappu, as part of the jubilee.

The construction of Fathima Hospital and the setting up of the Vasco da Gama Research Institute of Cochin were the key events of the year-long celebrations.

Research centre

The research centre, which has numerous records on the history of the diocese since its inception, was set up to help scholars and students. It will be a reference centre and a centre for teaching languages like Portuguese, French, Latin and German.
