Child Census faces flak

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: Concerned for Working Children (CWC), an NGO working on child rights issues, has said that the census of out-of-school children conducted recently by the Department of Education demonstrates the Government’s “utter lack of commitment.”

Kavita Ratna of CWC has alleged in a release that the Child Census was “disorganised” and conducted in a “disinterested manner.” Children counted were treated with “total disregard for the actual causes that prevent children from accessing meaningful education”, she has added.

Representatives of CWC, who accompanied some of the teams, have reported that the enumeration process they witnessed “made a mockery of the exercise,” according to the release. The CWC has alleged that in some of the locations, the census scheduled to take place between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. began late and concluded early.
