42 lakh additional voters detected in State

Special Correspondent

Bangalore city with 16 Assembly segments tops the list

BANGALORE: The problem of additional voters is assuming new proportions in the State with the Election Commission detecting 42 lakh of them so far.

Chief Electoral Officer R. Ramaseshan told presspersons here on Thursday that this was noticed during the two cycles of multi-layered checks of the voters’ list taken up by the commission.

He said the commission would delete the additional names, which account for nearly 10 per cent of the total voters in the State. While the additional voters were spread out in most of the districts of the State, Bangalore city, which has 16 Assembly constituencies, had more number of additional voters than other areas.

During the checks, the commission also noticed that names of 13 lakh eligible voters had not been included in the list.

Steps would be taken to include these names in the voters’ list, he said.

Mr. Ramaseshan reiterated that the draft voters’ list would be published on February 7. Eligible voters could still submit applications along with Form 6 for inclusion of names, if their names were missing in the draft list, he said.

The draft list would also be put on the website.

An online facility had been provided to search the names of voters in Bangalore city by typing their names in the search box.

Mr. Ramaseshan made it clear that the intention of the multi-layered checks was not just to delete the additional names, but to also cleanse the electoral roll.

He said the third round of multi-layered checks would also be conducted soon to further cleanse the electoral roll.

Answering a query, he said the commission was not going ahead with the proposal to introduce voters’ list with photographs of voters.
