Bangalore: “Once inside a classroom, a teacher is a teacher anywhere. That breaks down many cultural barriers,” says Owen Fortosky, principal of a school at Saskatoon in Canada and part of the Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF). He, with his colleague Shelly Tootoosis, is in Bangalore to conduct a five-day workshop organised by the All-India Primary Teachers’ Federation (AIPTF). “For instance, the question of how to handle a child who does not pay attention in class is challenge to teachers anywhere in the world,” says Mr. Fortosky. Such universally-shared experiences of teachers, adds Ms. Tootoosis, makes interaction and sharing possible across barriers of language and culture. They worked out a basic model on this year’s theme, “Academic Leadership Development”, before they arrived here. But it evolved as the classes progressed. Trainers from CTF, in collaboration with AIPTF, have been visiting India for the last 10 years to help teachers improve their professional competence. Thirty-five teachers from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Mizoram are attending the ongoing workshop this year.
