dated February 1, 1958: Tributes to Gandhiji

Mahatma Gandhi was “a symbol of a new idea,” said Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, in a tribute to his memory published in Peace News, the international pacifist weekly. Peace News published tributes to his memory from Mrs. Roosevelt, Rev. Michael Scott, Miss Muriel Lester and several others. Mrs. Roosevelt said that the Mahatma’s memory “continues to inspire more and more people and continues to give them greater understanding of the values which this great man tried to teach in his life.” The Manchester Guardian published two pictures taken at the cremation of the Mahatma’s body ten years ago. It also published an article on “The legacy of the Mahatma” on its centre page. The Star, in editorial comment on the anniversary, said that “Gandhi led a nation gently to independence and life.”
