NEW SEASON, NEW CAR: JK Tyre’s Karun Chandhok (left) and Armaan Ebrahim strike a pose with the car unveiled for the new motorsport season in New Delhi on Thursday. NEW DELHI: The National Enduro Championship with LGB Hyundai cars will be the significant new addition to the calendar of Indian motorsport this season, as was announced by JK Tyre in the presence of its brand ambassadors, Karun Chandhok and Armaan Ebrahim, here on Thursday. The new race, spanning 90 minutes, will have two drivers per car and each driver will be able to drive a maximum of 22 minutes at a stretch. “Different types of races help in the growth of a driver. Even the F1 drivers go for different races to sharpen themselves. This event will help the young drivers learn to handle the pit stops, conserve the tyres and efficiently negotiate the driver changes,” said Karun. The Enduro event will feature 16 cars and 32 drivers. The 11th JK Tyre National championship will be spread over six legs and feature 12 races, at Coimbatore and Chennai. The first round is scheduled in Chennai on February 9 and 10. Vicky Chandok announced that it was the 25th year of association of JK Tyre with motor sports, and that he was happy to see so many teams competing in the championship. There will also be a Super Bikes section in two classes of 600 cc and 1000 cc, as a follow up to Madras Motorsport Club’s announcement of 2008 as the ‘Year of the Bikes’. The National racing calendar: First round: February 9 and 10, Chennai; Second round: June 28 and 29, Coimbatore; Third round: July 26 and 27, Coimbatore; Fourth round: August 11-12, Venue not mentioned; Fifth round: September 20-21, Chennai; Sixth round: October 4-5, Chennai.
