ERODE: The State government’s resolve to set up additional village-based infrastructure, including cold chains, to aid farmers has been underscored by Erode District Collector T. Udayachandran. “Godowns and cold storage facilities will be established in rural areas. Farmers’ associations should apply for them, so that they could be set up with bank loans,” said District Collector T. Udhaychandran, presiding over a farmers’ grievances redress meeting at the Collectorate here. He said he was aware of the problem of pollution faced by farmers. “Action has been taken against polluters in accordance with the High Court directive. The Pollution Control Board will take drastic steps against them.” In order to stop wild animals from damaging crops, the Forest Department had suggested digging of elephant trenches. Mr. Udhychandran said this would be considered when the National Employment Guarantee Scheme was implemented in April. Under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), silt from tailend canals would be removed. He wanted farmers to submit details about canals which required desilting. Tamilaga Vivasayeegal Sangam president E.R. Kumarasamy wanted the Collector to take steps to increase the procurement price of milk in Erode district as it was lower than in other districts.
