HYDERABAD: Just like the innovative thinking promoted by the Montessori concept, teachers of various Montessori schools of the city came up with novel and fresh ideas for the promotion of Montessori movement in India and achieving the goals the concept envisages. The ideas came up at an ‘Open Forum’, organised by the Montessori Training & Research Trust, Hyderabad and the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) on Thursday. The questions posed for the participants touched on the aspirations and dreams and the future of Montessori movement in India, the challenges and obstacles, role of AMI in leading the movement and maximising the contributions of various stakeholders in the movement that changed the very concept of learning across the globe during the last century. SuggestionsSome of the suggestions that came up were reaching out to children irrespective of ethnicity, social and economic backgrounds and learning to share with people who need education the most. Earlier, Megan Tyne, Chairperson of the International Montessori Centenary Committee made a presentation on the growth of Montessori concept that took birth in a slum in Rome in 1907 and how it spread to over 100 countries. She said the method followed in 22,000 schools in 110 countries was the single largest pedagogy in the world. Lakshmi Krishna Kumar, AMI trainer, explaining the concept of workshop, she said the questions posed for teachers were related to ‘Service of the child’ and the teachers had to come up with solutions from an Indian perspective. The open forum was organised to mark the visit of André Roberfroid, AMI president and the former Deputy Director of UNICEF to India. The visit is in preparation for the 2009 International Montessori Congress to be held in Chennai from January 5 to 8, 2009. It will be the 26th International Montessori Congress and is being held in India for the first time.
