CHENNAI: The Corporation Council on Thursday approved rules setting down penalties for littering, spitting, bathing or urinating in public, besides fines for improper disposal of garbage or feeding animals in locations other than those set aside for such activity. Following objections from members, the clause making Corporation’s approval mandatory for public meetings was removed. Sanitary and Health Inspectors would be responsible for enforcing these rules, Mayor M. Subramanian said. There is at least one Sanitary Inspector for each ward. Rules from April 1Those not segregating garbage can also be fined under the rules that would be enforced from April 1. An intensive awareness campaign would be undertaken in February and March. The infrastructure to handle segregated garbage, including composting yards, would be ready by the time, he said. Residents and commercial establishments would be encouraged to segregate garbage and hand it over to those collecting door-to-door. The assistance of non-governmental organisations and residents’ associations would be sought. Once the system was running, the local body would take steps to reduce the number of public dustbins. The local body took another step towards widening of Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai with the Council releasing over Rs. 12 crore to cover part of the compensation to be paid to land owners. About 8 grounds of land have to be acquired for the construction of pavement and service lanes. Land for police station The council approved the handing over of land for the construction of the R-2 Kodambakkam police station in ward 120. Following a request from the police, the local body has ensured that access to the location was available from the main road and has offered the land for purchase at market rates or at an annual rent of one per cent of the rate to the Police Department. The local body has also taken over some land near the Vadapalani temple for setting up Corporation school or parks, following complaints that the area was being used by anti-socials.
