Hyderabad: It’s only when you scale the mountain that you know what it takes to be on top. And it was pretty evident from the faces of the 23- member team of budding engineers from Muffakham Jah College of Engineering and Technology (MJCET) who were cheered by the college students.

The team won the second prize in the hill climbing event on their all-terrain vehicle at the BAJA SAE India 2007, an extreme sports event held at Peethampur in Indore recently.

The all-terrain vehicle was designed, fabricated and developed by the 23 member team of the college that consisted of students from mechanical, production and electrical and electronics engineering streams over a period of three months.

Features of vehicle

Having a 280 CC engine from Lombardini on board, transmission from Mahindra and Mahindra and a four speed gear box, the vehicle is packed with nine horse power.

Interestingly, during the event, while most colleges showcased a prototype of their vehicles, being the only team from A.P., Hyderabadi students managed to showcase a working prototype to the organisers.

“The whole experience is definitely memorable. There were some technical hitches during the competitions, but in spite of that, we managed to bag the second prize in the event where this mean machine completed the event in seven seconds flat,” says Naitik Mehta, a team member.

The team slogged it out for six hours every day for a month, working on different aspects of the vehicle at a garage located in Jeedimetla. “We stayed at a garage and worked on the machine. It was only during the last two months that we pulled up our socks, worked day and night to get the vehicle done,” says P. Ravi Teja, who headed the electrical team that worked on the vehicle.

But winning is not all. The current team has already chosen a new team to work on another machine that will take part in the next BAJA event this year.
