NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Thursday permitted self-styled godman Chandraswami to go abroad to meet his disciples. Chandraswami is facing prosecution in as many as ten cases. Nine cases pertain to violation of the FERA and one to criminal conspiracy for his alleged role in the assassination of then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul permitted him to visit the United Kingdom, Dubai and Mauritius for one month to meet his disciples in those countries. Chandraswami said in his petition that he was visiting these countries at the request of his disciples. Granting permission, Mr. Justice Kaul directed Chandraswami to deposit fixed deposit receipts (FDRs) worth Rs.1.10 lakh and a surety of Rs. 2 lakh as part of the pre-conditions for his visit to these countries. The Court further directed him to provide full details of his itinerary to the Enforcement Directorate and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) before leaving the country. The CBI is investigating the criminal conspiracy case against him while the Directorate is investigating the FERA violations cases. The High Court orders came on two separate revision petitions by the CBI and the Directorate against a trial court order here granting permission to Chandraswami to visit these countries. Opposing the trial court order, the investigating agencies submitted that if Chandraswami was permitted to go abroad he might not return to the country to face trial in these cases.
