Hockey
CHAMPION: Madras, winner of the inter-zone inter-university tournament. THANJAVUR: Madras scripted a comfortable 3-0 win over VBS Purvanchal to clinch the title in the all-India inter-zone inter-university hockey tournament, organised by Bharathidasan University, at the TUK Arts College here on Thursday. All the goals were off penalty corners. Madras dominated the proceedings from the start and applied pressure consistently on the VBS defence. The former’s midfielders have to be given credit for feeding the forwards with some lovely passes. The VBS players found it hard to penetrate Madras’s rock solid defence. Raja converted off a penalty corner in the 27th minute to put Madras in the lead. VBS players lost their concentration, involving in heated exchanges with the referees quite often. VBS could have bounced back early in the second half, had it capitalised on some lethargic moves by the Madras players. But its forwards were really struggling to find their rhythm. Twelve minutes into the second half, Raja struck again to increase the lead. Eight minutes from time, Ramesh Kanna scored to ensure victory for Madras. The results: Final: Madras 3 (Raja 2, Ramesh Kanna 1) bt VBS Purvanchal 0.
