Savour a slice of Calcutta film review

Dull: Dileep and Meera Jasmine in Calcutta News.

Calcutta News

In Calcutta News, scripted and directed by Blessy, a lot of interesting things happen to the lead characters, Ajit Thomas (Dileep) and Krishna Priya (Meera Jasmine). Sadly, the characters lack enough vitality to appeal to the viewers. Probably because, the film does not attempt to reveal their inner conflicts.

A major plus point is the superb portrayal of Calcutta by ace cinematographer S. Kumar. S. Kumar succeeds in capturing a slice of life of the common man on the streets of Calcutta.

Ajit is a young reporter working for the Calcutta News, a TV channel based in Calcutta. In the course of his wanderings on the streets, a young Malayali couple catches his attention. After a few days, the body of an unidentified young man, stabbed to death, is found in the streets. Ajit recognises him as Hari (Indrajit) and seeks the whereabouts of the woman, Krishna Priya. He finds her locked up in a room and arranges a shelter for her with his female colleagues. He learns that Krishna Priya had been tricked into marriage by Hari. He had brought her to Calcutta to sell her for flesh trade. A dispute with his partners in crime had led to his death.

Gradually, Ajit and Krishna Priya get attracted to each other. But Hari’s criminal partners are on the prowl for her. It falls upon Ajit to protect her and fight the gang.

The cast includes Innocent, Vimala, Sumitra, Bindu Panikkar and Thampy Antony.

The lyrics of Vayalar Sarathchandra Varma are set to music by Debjyothi Misra, disciple of the late Salil Choudhury. Calcutta News has been produced by Antony Thekkek for Kayal Films.
