Puducherry
PUDUCHERRY: Leader of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) in Parliament M. Ramadass has urged the Central government to provide financial assistance to the tune of Rs.34.51 crore for extending relief to the farmers, fishermen and other weaker sections who had been dispossessed by the rain. In a letter to Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Thursday, he said that Puducherry and Karaikal were severely affected during the north east monsoon in December last. Almost 1/4th of the annual rainfall of that year occurred from December 17 to 19 inundating many villages and causing flash floods in the Malatar in Puducherry. Almost all sectors, including housing, agriculture, animal husbandry, roads, bridges, irrigation, water supply and fishing, were affected, Mr.Ramadass said. The total loss was estimated to be Rs.34.51 crore. The damage caused to the houses had been estimated at Rs.26 lakh and crops such as paddy, pulses and groundnut which were ready for harvesting or sowing on a total area of 13,998.03 ha were completely damaged causing losses to the tune of Rs.7 crore, he said. Fishing equipment worth about Rs.40.07 lakh had also been damaged, he said. Mr. Ramadass referred to a plea made by the Puducherry government to the Ministry of Home Affairs to fully compensate the damage caused by the rain.
