Tight security for President’s visit

First President to visit Hampi in two decades


HAMPI: Hampi will remain closed for visitors and tourists on February 3 in view of the visit by President Pratibha Patil.

Besides beefing up security, the district administration has taken steps to ensure that her visit to various places in Hampi was smooth.

Ms. Patil will be the first President to visit the world famous Hampi in the past two decades.

She will visit five monuments during her three-hour visit.

Governor Rameshwar Thakur and some senior officials would accompany her.

The President will land at the make-shift helipad in the precincts of Hotel Mayur Bhuvaneshwari at Kamalapur at 10.50 a.m.

From there, she will be taken to Virupaksha temple.

After the darshan there, she will visit Ugra Narasimha idol and proceed towards Lotus Mahal, Hazara Rama temple and then to Vijaya Vittala temple, which houses the stone-chariot and musical pillars, according to Arvind Srivastav, Deputy Commissioner.

Amrit Paul, Superintendent of Police, said 150 police officers and 1,500 constables had been deployed in Hampi.

In addition, five anti-sabotage teams, land mine and bomb disposal squad, six platoons of KSRP and 10 units of DAR had been deployed.
