Plea to improve conditions in hostels
Special Correspondent
VILLUPURAM: The Social Awareness Society for Youths (SASY) and the European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR) have deplored the poor conditions in the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes hostels attached to educational institutions.
They have urged the State government to constitute a monitoring committee comprising IAS officials, representatives of parents-teachers associations and human rights activists to find out the lapses and suggest corrective measures. The organisations cited the recent instance in which hostellers of Govindasamy Government Arts College observed a hunger strike for two days in protest against the unhygienic condition in the hostel and the lack of amenities.
The cooking vessels were not properly cleaned and pulses and vegetables were not regularly provided.
The wardens were either not appointed or irregular in their visits. For want of facilities, only 60 students of the sanctioned strength of 127 were staying in the hostel.
According to V.A. Rameshnathan, director of SASY, the hostels were deterrents to the students to pursue higher education. Immediate steps should be taken to improve amenities in the hostels. The organisations also demanded free health insurance to the hostellers.
