Councillors oppose contract renewal

They express displeasure over garbage clearance work

NAMAKKAL: Expressing dissatisfaction over the performance of the private firm engaged in garbage collection in Namakkal town, councillors cutting across party affiliations opposed the municipal administration’s move to award fresh contract for the work to the same firm.
At the Namakkal Municipal council meeting held here on Thursday, councillors including the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam members, urged the municipality to cancel the resolution, which was brought up in the council seeking approval for the bid submitted by the firm.
Members alleged that the garbage cleaning work in the town was very poor. Namakkal, which achieved the special recognition of Zero Garbage Town, is now struggling to ensure 100 per cent garbage collection. In many areas, the collection is very poor and we are flooded with complaints from the people, they claimed.
They held the private firm, which was carrying out the garbage collection, responsible for the poor condition. They strongly opposed the municipality’s move to award the garbage collection contract to the same firm once again.
When a DMK councillor M.M. Pandian, backed the local body’s move, the AIADMK members protested against his statement and entered into a heated argument with him.
They walked out of the council hall in protest. They, however, returned to the council hall after five minutes. Council Chairman R. Selvaraj (DMK) cancelled the resolution and directed the officials to call for re-tender for the work.
The other issue that dominated the discussions in the council was the delay in the implementation of Under Ground Drainage scheme. Councillors including vice-chairman Boopathi (DMK) complained that the trenches dug for laying pipelines had not been closed in many parts of the town. The residents were undergoing a great deal of ordeal as almost all the inner roads in the town were damaged.
They wanted the municipal administration to speed up the implementation of the scheme and repair the damaged roads immediately. Municipal Commissioner Poongodi Arumaikkan and senior officials were present.
