PUDUCHERRY: A team of doctors at Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute has performed “metal on metal arthroplasty of the hip,” a rare surgery, for the first time in Puducherry. In a release here, college Dean D.R. Gunasekaran said “metal on metal arthroplasty” was an emerging concept in the field of joint replacement surgery. The surgery was performed on a 48-year-old woman, who had been suffering from a medical condition known as ‘ankylosing spondylitis,’ which resulted in total fusion of hip joints. A team led by S. Ravichandran, joint replacement surgeon, Balasubramaniam, Professor Motilal and Professor Anbalagan performed the surgery that lasted about two hours, the release said. Dr. Gunasekaran and institute director James J. Gnanadoss said, “This is a boon to patients suffering from painful degenerative conditions of the hip, especially the young as the person is almost guaranteed a near-normal lifestyle after the surgery.” The doctors stressed the importance of creating awareness of these pathological conditions and the availability of successful and sophisticated modalities at an affordable cost.
