BERHAMPUR: Not much has been done to construct new houses for victims of communal violence at Barakhama in Kandhmal district. The State government has fixed April 1 as the date for the completion of new houses for the victims of communal violence, whose houses were destroyed completely. The families of Barakhama, who had their houses totally gutted in the communal violence last month, are still living in the relief camp at the village. The land on which their new houses are to be built is yet to be earmarked. Many of these families had their old houses on disputed land patches. The administration wants their new houses to be built up on undisputed land patches near the village. As the land for building the houses is yet to be identified no other preparations like making bricks locally have also not started. Warring groupsAccording to Debiprasad Panda, the officer with magistrate power posted at the Barakhama relief camp, is trying hard to bring in peace among the two warring communities at the village, which could lead to easy construction of houses for the victims. The unsolved land dispute between the tribals and the harijans is posing a major stumbling block in the path of construction of houses for the victims.
