Prakash Karat to address memorial lecture in Bhubaneswar today BERHAMPUR: The year-long birth centenary celebrations of Bhagawati Charan Panigrahi, one of the founders of the Communist movement in Orissa begun in the State on Friday. The national general secretary of the CPI addressed the gathering in memory of the great leader at the State headquarters of the party in Bhubaneswar. The general secretary of the CPI(M), Prakash Karat would be in Bhubaneswar on Saturday to address the Bhagawati Panigrahi memorial lecture. The year-long celebrations of the CPI(M) in memory of the Communist leader who also brought in great changes in Oriya literature begun through a meeting at Sahid Laxman Nayak memorial hall in the city. This meeting was attended by senior CPI(M) leader and former MP, Sivaji Patnaik, and State secretariat member Ali Kishore Patnaik. They described how Communist movement was initiated in Orissa along with success of proletariat movement in Russia due to activists like Panigrahi. He would also be remembered in Orissa as a writer who brought in the age of progressive writings related to the root of the soil in Orissa. Panigrahi wrote only a dozen books during his short life span yet he started off a movement through his writings that led to land reforms in the State in future. On his short story, film maker Mrinal Sen had based his critically acclaimed film, Mrigaya.
