MALAPPURAM: Allan Kellehear, renowned sociologist and head of the department of Social and Policy Sciences at the University of Bath, U.K., has praised the Pariraksha home care project being implemented in the district. During a visit to Malappuram on Friday, Prof. Kellehear said that the home care project implemented by the district panchayat in association with the Malappuram Palliative Initiative was a model worth emulating. Under this programme, hundreds of terminally ill patients are given palliative care at their homes across the district. Prof. Kellehear was instrumental in developing palliative care with people’s participation in Australia. He said the Pariraksha home care project must serve as an eye-opener for countries across the world and prompt them to take up home care schemes with people’s participation. Prof. Kellehear held discussions with district panchayat president Arimbra Mohammed, vice-president P.K. Kunhu, standing committee chairman for health Saleem Kuruvambalam, district panchayat secretary K. Vijayan, Suraksha programme manager Mohammed Kattupara and counsellor Niyas Babu. He also interacted with the beneficiaries of Pariraksha project.
