CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh Administration has appealed to the local residents to use electricity judiciously as power consumption has increased tremendously due to the severe cold weather in North India. An official spokesman said here on Friday that Chandigarh has no power generation of its own and is entirely dependent upon firm/ad hoc allocation from the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) and various Central power projects. Against the firm and ad hoc allocation of 235 MW, the Union Territory of Chandigarh is receiving 120 MW to 150 MW of power thereby over-drawing 10 MW to 75 MW of power at different hours of the day. Further over-drawl of power from the grid under any circumstances can lead to a failure of the grid system, thus plunging the whole region into darkness. He said this temporary shortage could be overcome if the people used electricity judiciously especially in the morning hours. The Administration has also requested the residents to switch on their storage geysers in the night so that the load during morning hours could be minimised. Unnecessary use of heaters could also be avoided in morning hours, he added. “If people do not cooperate, the Administration might be compelled to impose reasonable power cuts,” he said.
