Training programme for panchayat presidents, staff

PERAMBALUR: A day-long training programme on implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme for the benefit of village panchayat presidents, panchayat staff and makkal nala paniyalargal was held here on Thursday.
In his inaugural address, Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), V. Natarajan said the main objective of the programme was to improve the economy and living conditions of the rural people and to prevent their migration to urban areas to undertake income generation activities. The Centre had come forward to provide adequate assistance for giving 100 days of work for every family. A salary of Rs.80 per day would be provided for both men and women. The government was serious on the successful implementation of the programme and any irregularity would be dealt with seriously.
Works such as creation of new ponds, renovation of the existing water sources, desilting of the channels, strengthening of the tank bunds and laying of new roads could be undertaken under the project. He urged the participants to be conversant with the rules and regulations and implement the scheme without giving room for complaints.
