NHAI begins maintenance work on Tiruchi-Dindigul Highway

Staff Reporter

Entire 88-km stretch to be re-laid at a cost of Rs.1.3 crore

SORRY STATE: A section of the badly damaged Tiruchi-Manapparai sector, which poses a risk to truck and bus drivers at night.

TIRUCHI: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has started maintenance work on Tiruchi-Dindigul Highway at an outlay of Rs.1.3 crore.

The road, battered by floods and torrential rains in the last two years, developed a number of potholes all through its 88-km stretch and posed a threat to road-users.

Providing a vital link between Tiruchi city and major towns, including Palani, Dindigul, Theni and Manapparai, the road accounted for a huge volume of heavy vehicles throughout the day.

Continuous plying of heavy vehicles on the potholes had damaged the road at places such as Vellivadi.

Director of Project Implementation Unit, Madurai, Selvaraj, said the NHAI would carry out patch-work and re-laying of the entire stretch within a few months. He said the absence of bidders for the tenders called for by the NHAI had delayed the execution of the project.

On completion, the road would be handed over to a private firm under the ‘Build Operate and Transfer’ (BOT) programme for regular maintenance, Mr. Selvaraj said.
