This Day That Age
Declaring open the research block of the Cancer Institute run by the Women’s Indian Association in Adyar, Madras, on January 31, Mr. D.P. Karmarkar, Union Health Minister explained the magnitude of the problems confronting the country in the field of health and underlined the importance of research in combating various diseases. The new block, for the building of which a grant of Rs. 1 lakh was given by the Union Government in 1956-57, will house the research sections of Tissue Culture, Physics, Radio-active isotopes and Biochemistry. Dr. P. Arunachalam, Director of the Institute, said that this year the Government of India had given them a non-recurring grant of Rs.1.5 lakhs and a recurring grant of Rs. 1 lakh towards the equipment and maintenance respectively of the research sections. This would enable them to go ahead with immediate research programmes.
