Letters to the Editor
This refers to the editorial “From despair to hope” (Feb. 1). The BJP’s electoral victory in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh does not mean that the party is on a comeback trail. In the numerically more important States, the BJP stands irreversibly weakened due to its inept handling of economic issues and matters of social justice. In spite of leading the alliance that was in power at the Centre for six long years, it failed to grant reservation to the OBCs in higher education, which prompted large sections to desert the party. It relies on the upper caste vote and does not believe in adopting the inclusive approach. It looks unlikely that the BJP will even retain its present strength in 2009, leave alone improve upon it. Lingayath Krishna Rajesh, Mysore The BJP’s euphoria over its victory in the Assembly elections of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh is understandable. But the victory may not necessarily catapult it to power in the next Lok Sabha elections. One swallow does not make a summer. Moreover, issues that matter in the Assembly and the Lok Sabha elections are quite different. Sachdi Nanda, Chandigarh
