Letters to the Editor
The well-researched article, “Do political murders achieve their objectives?” (Jan. 28), not only provided a deep insight into assassinations that have taken place over the years but also the effects they have produced on subsequent generations. It is heartening to see that, even in the worst of times, governments have not sponsored political murders. A study of an assassin’s mind can reveal many secrets and perhaps help us to understand the motive behind assassinations better, rather than accept the state’s version blindly. Kunal Ray, Kochi The scintillating write-up should serve as an eye-opener to prospective and potential assassins and their instigators, abettors and supporters. Although assassinations may be successful and profitable in the short term, in the long run they are detrimental to the very cause the assassins seek to espouse. S.M. Pasha, Chennai In some cases, assassinations may be considered war. But in most cases, they are acts of vendetta or meant to create a political crisis. If every terrorist group starts swearing by its own values and carries out its activities, how can a universal code of law and justice be evolved? N. Chandrasekaran Bala, New Delhi
