Venkatesh, Kavya reign supreme

Madurai: Venkatesh Krishna of Tiruchi won three titles, while Kavya Bharat of SR Tennis Club (Chennai) claimed two in the AITA junior talent series (ranking) tennis tournament here on Friday.

The results (all finals): Boys u-16 singles: Venkatesh Krishna bt Praveen Raj 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(5). Doubles: Venkatesh & A. Veerabadran bt Prithivi & Balavignesh 6-3, 6-3. Under-14 singles: Venkatesh bt Subhas Kaushik 6-1, 7-5.

Girls: U-16 singles: Kavya Bharat bt Akshya Chandran 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Doubles: Kavya & Madhumita bt S.S. Deepika & A. Nikitha 6-1, 6-1. Under-14 singles: Akshya Chandran bt Priyaselva Kumar 6-4, 6-4.

Babu triumphs

Babu of Kamaraj Carrom Club won the open men’s singles title in the JCI Madurai Central and Divya Carrom Club District-level Pongal carrom tournament, defeating John Isaac of Pasumalai Carrom Club 25-3, 11-25, 25-0 at Madurai on recently.

Other results (all finals): Boys (u-18): Rajendra Prasad bt Sriram 18-15, 11-4; u-14: Kesava Prasad bt Jegan 5-15, 12-8, 18-10; u-12: Shibi Abhnar bt Rohanraj 18-14, 10-3; u-10: Rishee Prasad bt Allen Joshua 20-7.

Football tournament

The Alagappa University College of Physical Education Alumni Association will organise the 17th State-level inter-collegiate football tournament at Karaikudi during the last week of February. Entries close on February 11.

Vigneshwar triumphs

M. Vigneshwar of Nadar Matric School (Rajapalayam) won the boys’ under-15 title in the Virudhunagar District chess tournament for boys and girls at Sivakasi recently.

Nitish sparkles

A brilliant spell by fast bowler Nitish Kumar Sahaney (seven for 38) turned out to be pretty crucial as host Coimbatore took a vital 66-run first innings lead over Nagapattinam in the semifinal of the TNCA under-17 inter-district cricket tournament at the SNR Sons grounds in Coimbatore on Friday.

The host, after bundling out the visitor for 117, finished the opening day of the two-day match at 183 for nine.

The scores: Nagapattinam 117 in 40.4 overs (Vivek 48, Nitish Kumar Sahaney seven for 38) vs. Coimbatore 183 for nine in 47 overs (Dheer Bhimani 34, Vishnupathy four for 43).
