NEW DELHI: The Interpol on Friday issued red corner notices against the prime accused in the kidney transplant racket, Amit Kumar (40) and his brother Jeevan Kumar (36).

The Interpol warrants, issued following a request by the Central Bureau of Investigation, said Amit and Jeevan “are both subjects of national arrest warrants for illegally transplanting kidneys, cheating and criminal conspiracy.”

The CBI informed the Interpol that the two allegedly conducted over 500 illegal transplants in the past eight years. Both have been declared international offenders.

Dr. Amit has been at large since the Moradabad police conducted raids at his hospital in Gurgaon last week and busted the thriving kidney racket.

Since then, over a dozen people including Upender, a physician, Jeevan’s wife Pooja, Manipuri nurse Linda, and two drivers, have been arrested for their alleged links with the accused.

Many questioned

Several doctors, nurses and other para-medical staff have also been questioned to ascertain the extent of the network.

More than 10 hospitals and diagnostic laboratories in and around the capital are under the scanner.

The Haryana government has asked the Centre for a CBI probe into the multi-crore racket.

Following a report from the State Director-General of Police, R.S. Dalal, the State government has written to the Union government seeking a probe by the CBI as the accused had been active in several States.

Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss too had earlier sought a CBI probe into the racket. The Haryana police would continue its probe pending a CBI investigation.

Arrest in Rajasthan

In a related development, the Moradabad police on Friday arrested K.K. Aggarwal, a doctor, from Alwar in Rajasthan.

Police teams fan out

Police teams have fanned out to Noida, Ghaziabad, Delhi, Gurgaon, Rajasthan and Jammu and Kashmir looking for Amit. More arrests in the case are likely in the coming days.
