O.P. Nayyar Bangalore: If you love all those lilting Asha Bhonsle numbers composed by the legendary music director O.P. Nayyar in the Fifties and Sixties, this is an event you may not want to miss. Divine Mother Society is conducting a musical programme of Opee’s (as he was often called) favourite hits, “Gata Rahe Mera Dil”, in the city on Saturday. The programme will have singers from various cities coming together to pay homage to the great composer who gave hit numbers including “Jaayiye aap kahaan haayenge”, “Pukaarataa chalaa hoon main” and “Yeh dil e mushkil ye jeena yahan”. Known for spirited compositions which were considered by conservatives as “too trendy” for their time, Opee remained undaunted by critics and went on to carve a special place for himself in the history of Hindi film music. He was as radical in the way he dressed, with his signature felt hat. His songs for films like Aar Paar, Kashmir Ki Kali, Tum Sa Nahin Dekha, and Mere Sanam have gone on to become classics. Opee was closely associated with Dev Aanad and Guru Dutt. Suresh S., secretary, Divine Mother Society, says: “Our main objective in conducting this programme is to raise funds for our social service projects in Chennai and Bangalore in the areas of health care and education.” The programme will start by 6.30 p.m. at the Chowdiah Memorial Hall. The donor passes are available at Landmark and Music World outlets. For details, call 26578926.
