CLEARING UP: The spot where two workers died after mud caved in at Pallavaram on Friday.

TAMBARAM: Two men engaged in an underground drainage project in Pallavaram died on Friday when mud caved in the trench they were working.

The Pallavaram police identified the victims as S. Alex Pandian, 25 and M. Moorthy, 35, both hailing from Madurai district.

Road digging work

The accident took place on Griffith Road, where road digging work is in progress to lay sewers as part of the Rs. 52-crore project, currently under way in all 42 wards of the Pallavaram municipality. The trench was about 18-foot deep.

The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board is implementing the project and has engaged more than one contractor to execute the scheme that has been split into five packages.

Residents of Griffith Road said the trench was dug up about two months ago to lay sewers, but work was abandoned as rainwater seeped in. Work on laying sewers and plastering resumed on Friday, they told reporters.

At 2 p.m., the two workers were in the trench when loose mud caved in from all sides, burying them alive.

Though the police and firemen from Tambaram came to the spot in about 20 minutes, the workers could not be rescued. When the workers were pulled out, they were unconscious. They were pronounced dead at the Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital (Chromepet GH).

Officials of the Pallavaram Municipality and Pallavaram police station said further investigations were on.
