There is a need to increase road space, writes V.S. Palaniappan With the economic boom and industrial revival fuelling the buying power of common man, the Coimbatore city roads were witnessing a net addition of at least 300 vehicles per day besides the vehicles used by the floating population. This had resulted in the roads getting congested proving that Coimbatore was inching towards the chaotic traffic scenes witnessed in metros. The road space available had not increased to commensurate with the increasing number of vehicles on roads. In fact at some places the roads have shrunk owing to encroachments. While efforts being made to remove encroachments and widen the roads, an immediate solution lies in effective implementation of the concept of satellite bus stations. Mofussil buses that unleash terror on city roads causing nightmare to motorists could be terminated at the satellite bus stations, thus reducing the pressure on city roads substantially. While the buses on Palakkad and Pollachi roads were being terminated at Ukkadam bus stand, the administration was working towards constructing another bus stand on Mettupalayam Road for terminating the Mettupalayam and Udhagamandalam bound buses. There is a pertinent need for stopping the entry of mofussil buses into the city from Avanashi Road and Tiruchi Road for which the Singanallur bus stand had to be put into effective use. At present the bus stand is used by Tiruchi and Madurai bound buses only during the day while the Tirupur, Erode and Salem bound buses continue to enter the city. For the Pongal festival, the TNSTC operated its regular and special bus services to Madurai and Tiruchi from the Singanallur bus stand both during the day and night. These sectors are served only by TNSTC and there are no private buses. The other sectors such as Coimbatore-Erode and Coimbatore–Tirupur are served by private buses also. The bus stand constructed several years ago was lying without effective utilisation because of a stay obtained by private bus operators plying services on the Coimbatore – Tirupur sector insisting that they should not be made to terminate their services at Singanallur and should be allowed to ply up to Gandhipuram. The private operators had contended that they would be losing a revenue of around to Rs. 2 on every ticket if they were to terminate their services at Singanallur instead of Gandhipuram. The Transport Department and district administration was taking steps for getting the stay vacated and resolve the legal issue so that buses to Tirupur, Erode, Salem and Dharmapuri also could be terminated at Singanallur. With the battered Tiruchi Road that slices through the city causing nightmare for motorists and Avanashi Road being taken up for widening, the city traffic was struggling every day. The secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause, K. Kathirmathiyon, pointed out that in the interest of the society at large and public using the city roads, the Government should move the High Court seeking an early hearing in the case for getting the stay vacated and to put the Singanallur bus stand into optimum use. This would ease congestion on Avanashi Road and Tiruchi Road to considerable extent. He pointed out that satellite bus stations and bypass roads are a must for any city that was growing at a rapid pace. The vice-president of Citizens Voice Club, C.M. Jayaraman, said that while promoting the concept of satellite bus stands, the TNSTC should make sure that it operated a town bus service every five minutes connecting the Gandhipuram bus stand, Singanallur bus stand, Ukkadam bus stand and railway station both clockwise and anti-clockwise for the benefit of the passengers wanting to change buses for different destinations. These services would also help the regular commuters on these sectors.
