LANGUAGE LINK: K. Veeramani, Chancellor, Periyar Maniammai University, with Alexander M. Dubianski, Indologist, research scholar and Tamilologist, Moscow State University, at a seminar in Chennai on Friday. — CHENNAI: The Indo-Russian Cultural and Friendship Society (IRCUFS) and Periyar Maniammai University in a joint declaration here on Friday announced the launch of Tamil language classes in Moscow and Russian language classes in Maniammai University. The announcement was made by Chancellor of Periyar Maniammai University K. Veeramani, and research scholar, Indologist and Tamilologist of Moscow State University Alexander M. Dubianski, at a function organised by the IRCUFS and the university at the Russian Centre of Science and Culture. Mr. Veeramani said the memoradum of understanding (MoU) would pave the way for furthering bilateral ties and popularise Tamil language in Russia and Russian in Tamil Nadu. He also presented a Tamil book bringing out the importance of Periyar’s visit to Russia in 1932 to Dr. Dubianski. Joint effortMr. Veeramani, who read out a set of resolutions passed at the meeting, said among other things, the joint effort would encourage more student cultural exchange programme between the countries, confer awards for promoting ties between India and Russia and undertake translation works of Russian books in Tamil language and vice-versa. Dr. Dubianski said efforts would be made to set up a Tamil department in the University of Humanities in Moscow and outlined the importance of how language was a key factor to improve relations. V.M. Lakshminarayanan, Chairman, Indo-Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industries, stressed the importance of how language was important for the development of two-way trade. Vladimir Pothapov, Director, Institute of Russian Language, was confident that such joint initiatives would go a long way in furthering cooperation between the countries in the areas of education, tourism and culture. N. Ramachandran, Vice-Chancellor, Periyar Maniammai University, said it would throw open many more new employment opportunities for Indian students in Russia and vice-versa. P. Thangappan, General Secretary, IRCUFS, outlined the importance of the joint declaration of Periyar Maniammai University and the IRCUFS.
